Discover, Learn, Decide: Tools for Implementing Data and Engaging Students in Non-Majors Biology

November 5, 2015

Keynote Address: Cancer, Energy Drinks and Ebola: Using Data to Build a Relevancy-Based Course

In today’s fast-paced scientific and technology-based society, instructors are being asked to develop course content that is relevant to their students. The challenge when presenting current event topics is to ensure that all students have the same level of background knowledge before entering the classroom. However, students don’t know what they don’t know, and this lack of information often results in an inefficient use of class time and frustration on the part of the student and instructor.

This session will demonstrate how the content from a traditional text, coupled to the data from the SmartBook platform, is providing the opportunity to identify knowledge deficiencies in students, and allow for the rapid development of relevancy based modules in a large-lecture non-majors biology course.
